Be a Fan Favorite with a New Hairstyle

When Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love showed up for the team’s recent media day, he came ready to talk about the game, his strengths, and the team’s strategies and dynamics. Anxious reporters eager for answers peppered him with questions about how the season will play out.

But there was at least one other thing Love kept fielding questions about that scored more attention than his solid NBA record and multi-million dollar contract…his hair.

Have a Good Hair Day

kevin love cavalers team hair cutUpon arrival at the Cavalier’s media day, Love’s 6-foot-10 frame stacked with 243 pounds of talent and muscle, wasn’t what generated the most buzz. It was his hair. During the off-season, Love decided to let his hair grow and show off his natural curls. Some say he got a perm.

Why? He joked with reporters when he said, “Yeah, I accidentally used the shampoo I bought for my dog. I don’t know what happened.”

This week the Cavaliers will take on the Atlanta Hawks in Cincinnati. And while the Internet is still buzzing about Love’s new hairstyle, it won’t matter when Love gets back to doing what he does best, scoring points.

Generate a Little Buzz

If you’ve been thinking about changing your hairstyle, trying out a new look, or going back to an old style, forget about what everyone else might think. Love wasn’t phased by all the questions about his hair, because he knows when it comes to playing the game, he’s still a fan-favorite and dominating force for the Cavaliers.

If you feel like you’re ready to embrace a new look and new hairstyle, do it. We can help. Our trained stylists can give you Kevin-style curls. A more traditional Express Cut might be what you’re looking for. Or maybe you’re ready to try adding a little color. We’ll help you make a smart hairstyle choice and give you haircut that will even generate a little buzz.

Nose and Ear Hair Removal – You Have Options

Just about everybody wants to be recognized for something. An accomplishment, an amazing feat of strength, shark-like sales acumen, street smarts, the skills to fix anything, a sense of style, or the dude who has all kind of connections. You get the idea.

It’s something India-born Radhakant Baijpai thought a lot about while helping customers at a local grocery store. But his quest to be remembered probably isn’t on your bucket list. He’s been in the spotlight more than once over the years for showing off his 25-inch ear hair. There are a lot of things you can do in life to make a name for yourself, but if you have any sense of style, standards for personal grooming and self-respect, growing out your ear hair shouldn’t be one of them. (And look him up if you want…  you’ve been warned.)nose hair trimming waxing

Look in the Mirror: Get Up Close and Personal

Wondering if you’ve got jungle-like nose hair or ear hair growing like freshly fertilized grass? Don’t wait until you catch someone staring at your face, or get called out by your buds for ear and nose hair long enough to braid. Make it a daily habit to look in the mirror and get up close and personal. If you’ve got more hair growing there than you would like, do something about it.

Option 1: DIY Ear-and-Nose Hair Removal

If your up-close-and-personal inspection reveals unwanted ear or nose hair, you can take a DIY approach to remove it. Some guys use tweezers or scissors to remove those unwanted hairs. An electric razor or nose-hair timmer can do the job. And some even have the guts to use DIY waxing kits (just be prepared for a messy job mixed with muffled cursing).

Option 2: Let the Experts Take Care of Unwanted Ear-and-Nose Hair

If you’d rather not point a sharp object at your face or coat your nostrils with a mysterious wax-like substance and hope for the best, get help. One of the many salon services we offer at Signature Male is professional waxing for nose-and-ear hair removal.

If you have ear hair anything like Radhakant Baijpai, you may want to seek out an expert who performs laser hair removal. But if you’ve got the typical rogue hair growing from your ear or nose, you don’t have to spend a fortune to take care of it. Our friendly, and highly-trained estheticians know how to minimize the ouch-factor and get rid of those unwanted nose-and-ear hairs with waxing.

3 Reasons Men Need a Manicure

Most guys don’t give their hands a lot of attention. Stop and think about it. You’re probably far more likely to schedule a golf game, hit the gym, work on your car, or take care of all those to-do-projects at home than worry about what your hands look like. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

manicure for men des moines iowaTake a closer look at your hands, and you might discover that they’re in dire need of a little more attention. Here are three reasons you need a man-icure.

  1. Dirt Under Your Nails
Working outdoors or in the shop isn’t the only way to get dirt under your nails. Everything you handle has the potential to deposit little bits of grime under your nails like yesterday’s messy burrito, the clean sweep you made to clean up the kitchen, or the yardwork you finally checked off your list after weeks of nagging.

At first you might not notice a little dirt under your nails, but left unchecked that little space under your nail can become a breeding ground for dirt, germs, and bacteria.

Fortunately, keeping your nails clipped, regularly washing your hands with soap and water, and a nailbrush can keep your nails clean.

2. Ragged Nail Edges
Are you a nail-biter? Do you ever use your nail as a make-shift screwdriver to replace the batteries on the back of the remote? Or do you spend a lot of time getting your hands dirty at work? And if you do happen to clip your nails, do you ever file them, too? If you’re among the majority of guys who don’t spend a lot of time thinking about this, take a closer look at your hands and nails. You’ll probably see at least a few nails with jagged edges worn by a hard-day’s work or rush-job to clip your nails.

If your nails are a little ragged around the edges, you can file those edges away in just a few minutes.

  1. Dry Skin and Calluses

Even if you’re not out working in the yard all day, you’re still not immune to calluses. Spend time in the gym, and you’ll likely build up calluses from lifting weights. And dry skin can take a toll on any guy’s hands when the conditions are right and lead to rough patches and cracked skin.

When you give your hands a thorough inspection and notice dry skin and calluses, there are a few things you can do. Soak your hands in warm water. Rub those calluses and dry spots with a pumice stone. Then soothe your skin with some lotion or hand-cream to keep the dry spots and calluses from coming back right away.

Hand and nail care doesn’t have to be hard. But it does take time to keep dirt away, avoid that ragged look, and treat and prevent dry skin and calluses. Instead of neglecting your hands and nails and putting off the care and maintenance they need, get a mani-cure. Our hand detailing services and paraffin treatments can make a big difference.

5 Rules Men Should Follow for Good Hair

While you’re shooting the breeze with your buds, digging in to meet a deadline at work, or enjoying some much-deserved R&R, we spend our time on and off the job talking about the latest hairstyles and fashion trends for men. Our team of stylists recently compared notes on hairstyles for men after binging on current magazines, celebrity news, and walk-in requests for some inspired Signature Male styles.

men's hair care des moines iowaBefore you take out your shaver and try to hack your way to a better haircut, enlist the help of a friend, or better yet, visit Signature Male for the best haircut and style you’ve ever experienced, there’s a few things you should know about good hair. To look your best, check out the latest trends in men’s hairstyles based on what we found.

  1. Haircare should be easy. It’s the first rule of good hair (No, it’s not like Fight Club. You can talk about your hair if you want to.). A low-maintenance hairstyle is practically a universal commandment for most guys. Even if you’re a celebrity with your own personal stylist, guys across the board prefer this above all else.
  1. You’ve got options. There’s nothing wrong with a close-cropped buzz cut if that’s what you like. But if you want to be able to change up your look, consider a more versatile haircut like a fade, long on top, short on the sides. You’ll be able to slick it back, part it to the side, or even wear it down based on your plan for the day.
  1. Personality matters. When we were swapping stories about the latest trends in men’s hair, we also talked a lot about men’s fashion. The latest styles in clothes say a lot about your personality, and so does your hair. Your own Signature Male style can help define your look, and if you’re not sure what that is, we can help.
  1. Mix business with pleasure. All work and no play…you know how that one ends. Guys want to look good and feel good at work and when they’re off the clock. The right hairstyle makes it possible for you to do both. A little color, the right cut, or a custom style and cut, can be just the thing to help you mix business with pleasure.
  1. Don’t be afraid of contrast. One of the trends we noticed in our collaborative review of trends in men’s hair was that a lot of the styles showcased plenty of contrast. But it wasn’t just for sharp lines, color, a carefully sculpted part, or a mix of long and short. Some styles even worked by creating a contrast with your style of clothes.

If you want to redefine your look based on current trends in men’s hair, stop by or give us a call or click here to schedule an appointment. We’ll help you identify the right look and give you the perfect cut to create your own Signature style.

reflexology massage foot massage des moines iowaWith today’s stressful work environments, we are constantly coming and going, standing on our feet for hours (or worse, sitting for hours) and just waiting for that moment when the front door opens and the couch awaits us. Pressure is applied to specific areas on the feet, hands and ears. Generally relaxing, it has a similar effect to acupuncture. Overall, your health benefits from reflexology improve with the right amount of pressure. There are various conditions men can suffer from such as infertility, urological diseases (prostate cancer), even sexual disorders. The body is filled with reflex areas and good Reflexologists can pinpoint each to determine what is off balance in your body or what is in need of attention.

Regular appointments for reflexology are encouraged as they have many advantages for your life. Caring for Long Hair – Men, How do You Tame That Mane?

Not ready to chop off your luscious locks? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Many celebrities are saying no to their routine hair cut and making a trend out of long hair. Keith Urban, Jake Gyllenhaal and Brad Pitt are just a few major celebs who have been turning heads in 2015. No matter the length or volume, there are plenty of ways to make long hair on men look great for any event.

long hair styles for menThe Rocker Look

Hair straighteners are commonly found in the women’s hair and makeup section at almost any store. That doesn’t mean men can’t use them. At a low cost, you can tame your frizz and unwanted waves by using a straightener.

In sections, straighten your hair from top to bottom. You may have to do this more than one time if your hair is curlier. Your hair should fall into place with the part you have but if it doesn’t, simply brush it back with your fingers as a guide. Apply texturizing creme to the ends of your hair to prevent static and eliminate frizz. Gel also works and can hold your hair into place with just a small dab brushed through your hair.

Long Curls And Waves

Have you ever wondered how Howard Stern keeps his curls under control? He doesn’t have to spend hundreds of dollars to make his head of hair look good under the spotlight. Find the right texturizing creme or gel for your curls, preferably one for hair with more volume. While your hair is wet, take a tablespoon or smaller of gel and scrunch it through your hair with your fingers. If you have a fuller head of hair, you may need more. Let your hair air dry. Note, this works for wavy hair too but requires less product.

If your curls are out of control and need extra maintenance, a quarter size of curl control cream should do the trick. For best results, allow your hair to air dry otherwise blow dry your hair using a large three pronged diffuser while you scrunch out the extra moisture.

The Man Bun

If you want to get your long hair out of your face but don’t want to commit to cutting it shorter, the man bun is for you. It might be portrayed as sloppy when you see a guy with a man bun working out at the gym, but it can be a professional look with the right length and tools.

To tie your hair into place, you will need an elastic hair band. Find a color similar to your hair color to make it look normal. Scoop your hair with your hands starting at your forehead with one hand, and meeting in the middle with your other hand that is scooping from the bottom, up. Gather your hair into the band, twist one side of the band and loop your hair through the second loop like you were tying a ponytail. Instead of tying it off at one loop, twist your hair band another time and loop it back through for a tighter hold. Any excess hair can be tucked into your band. You may need a handheld mirror to see if there are any loose hairs.

At Signature Male, we can help you keep your hair long and manageable with our texture treatment, highlights or trimming services. We’ll give you easy tips how to style your long hair so schedule an appointment today!

Preventing Clogged Pores and Acne… Yes, ZITS!

You might think that lathering up with some soap while you’re in the shower and giving your face a thorough washing is enough to prevent those dreaded zits and annoying acne. If you’re nodding your head, you’re not alone. A lot of guys think a basic face wash is sufficient to prevent clogged pores, but that’s just not the case. Sweat, dirt, and environmental factors can all contribute to clogged pores that can lead to skin irritations and blemishes. Fortunately, there are a few simple things you can do to keep your skin clear and your pores open and happy.prevent acne and zits for men in des moines

1. Use face cleanser to clear your pores
Seriously, face-specific cleanser isn’t just for women. Take a trip to the skin care aisle and find a good face cleanser made with glycolic and salicylic acid. Wash your face at least once a day with face cleanser, and you’ll get the upper hand on removing dirt that can clog your pores and promote acne.

2. Exfoliate your mug with face scrub
It’s not enough to just gently wash with soap and use face cleanser to keep your pores clear. Think of it like this. If your car was dirty, and you simply sprayed it with water, would it be cleaner? Probably. And when it dried, there’s no doubt you’d still see plenty of dirt a basic hose-off didn’t remove. You’ve got to give your face a good scrubbing to remove dirt and prevent clogged pores. Use a washcloth or exfoliating sponge and face scrub to remove dead skin and improve your complexion.

3. Get a facial
You can get your hands on a variety of products to give yourself a facial. But in all honestly, the sweet spot about this important skin care practice is the luxury of having someone else do it for you. Our facial options include three different levels of service to clear your pores and improve the health of your skin.

4. Treat acne with OTC options or see a doctor
If you have acne that doesn’t respond to over-the-counter options within a week, make an appointment to see a dermatologist. OTC options that include benzol peroxide and salicylic are effective ingredients that can treat acne, but if that doesn’t work you may need prescription medication to clear up your skin and your pores.

At Signature Male , we can provide the best solutions to keep you looking and feeling GREAT! Schedule an appointment online by clicking here or call 515-224-4849.

Wedding Season Hair Styling For Men

Hey Guys, wedding season is here. Let’s make it a perfect day for you and your significant other. While many men’s hair styles are the “Wash and wear” kind, the last thing you want everyone noticing while you walk down the aisle is some messed up nest on your head. You want to stand out for better or worse with a sleek look that will be a lasting impression in every picture you take – and there will be a LOT OF THEM.

awesome-wedding-hair-style-for-menAt Signature Male Salon, we add style to men’s hair styles without going overboard. Our cuts are personally designed to your preference so you won’t go unrecognized on your big day.

Here are some tips to getting the perfect cut. They can also be used for other aspects of a wedding celebration, too!

  1. Always stick to what you know. This is not the time for experimenting. If you’re used to styling your hair the same way every day then make sure your hair is cut similar. The same goes for the baby face and beard. Keep your scruff if that’s everyone is used to, but if it isn’t, keep that face smooth and clean.
  1. Schedule your haircut at least one week before your wedding date. This will give your hair plenty of time to settle down. By wedding day, your hair will be completely natural and look normal.
  1. Coordinate with other men in the party (groomsmen, etc.). It’s okay to have similarity but make sure there’s enough variety with each cut that you don’t all look identical. And remember, it’s better for them to experiment on your big day than it is for you.
  1. Add more texture. Get that intense look by using more texture to enhance your volume. The guests will be impressed when they notice you went the extra mile for your look.
  1. Communicate and coordinate with your partner at the event. Get insight on what they like and tell them your ideas as well. At the end of the day, you’re both keeping the lifetime of pictures that are to come.
  1. Let the professionals take over. Always schedule an appointment with a licensed professional who you can trust will get the job done right.

At Signature Male Salon, our stylists truly care about making your experience memorable. Schedule an appointment online by clicking here or call 515-224-4849.
